A NOBLE ANNIVERSARY

THE FIGHT FOR GRAVENSTAFEL MEN WHO DIED FOR VICTORY HEROES OF SPLENDID ACHIEVEMENT

The part that the New Zealanders took in the assault on Abraham Heights and Gravenstafel a year ago to-day makes a glowing page in the history of the war. The banner of high spiritual courage, of heroic endeavour, and splendid sacrifice was lifted high on that day of dearly-won victory, when our army fought with incomparable dash and gallantry one of the great successes of the third Ypres campaign. The British assault was decided upon just in time to forestall a German counter-attack, and the resistance met with was very strong, for the enemy lines were packed with men; pillboxes and concrete gun emplacements were strongly held. The New Zealanders were in the centre of the battle line that stretched from Gravenstafel and Abraham Heights to Broodseinde and Molenaresthoek. They laboured under difficulties imposed by a bulging line that made it impossible to set out in even lines of assault, and the swamp of the Hannebeek lay between them and their objectives. They went over the top, however, like a pack of hounds on a good hunting morning, and although some of the men sank waist-deep in the mud and others found themselves in a slough, they did get through somehow to win a complete and inspiring victory that is not excelled by any of the magnificent achievements in the proud record of the New Zealand Army. Many of our men fell in their fine endeavour, and the long list of "In Memoriam" notices published to-day is a sad reminder of the great sacrifice that was made in the cause of humanity.
