SECOND ASSAULT PRESSED
ANOTHER THRUST FOR AMIENS SLIGHT PROGRESS AT HEAVY COST The Germans have resumed what they call the Kaiser's battle with another vigorous blow aimed at Amiens. That blow is still being delivered, but the Allies await the result with quiet confidence, believing that the reinforcements they have brought up in men and guns are sufficient to check the enemy before he penetrates to any great distance. The heaviest attack fell on the French line, where a hundred thousand men were thrown into the fight, indicating that the Germans still have strong reserves with which to continue their attack. Relatively little progress was made, and they completely failed to achieve their objective—the Amiens-Clermont railway. Two villages were taken in the attack, which extended over a front of nine miles, but their capture was made at a cost far beyond their value, especially as the French retained the high ground in the neighbourhood. The attack on the British front was made on a wide front to the southward of Arras. Here the Germans made slight progress, in the vicinity of Demancourt, but at the cost of very heavy losses. Heavy reinforcements are still being landed by the enemy on the coast of Finland, where the Red Guards are showing determined opposition to the German occupation. Submarines were sunk, an order to prevent them falling into the hands of the enemy. The Allies are co-operating with the Red Guards _at___e_atoK_3<__t_KMu__nan railway.
