MILKMEN'S STARTING HOUR. When the Court of Arbitration was here at the beginning of last month, it will he rememhered that the members sat a< a commission under the Regulation of Trade ami Commerce Art. to hear an application from the Auckland Milk Vendors' Association, to suspend the clause -n tiie Shops and Otiicea Act. and also the provisions of the Auckland dairymen's award, relating tv the hour *t which milk can be delivered in tinearly morning, namely, not earlier than 4 o'clock a.m. The employers scut a deputation to Wellington to interview tlie Minister of Labour, with the view of having the restriction removed. The Minister referred tlie matter to the Court of Arbitration to report. At the hearing on .lime ,s evidence iv_ taken on both sides. Mr. A. Rosser opposed the application on behalf of the Auckland Dairy Employees' Union, on the grounds that i 1 i the hour of 4 axil, had been fixed by the Shops ami Offices Act as the startiiii: hour for milkmen as far back as ISOo. and the Act operated all over the Dominion: (2) no complaint a.- to the utireasona-bieness of the clause had been received from any other part of the Dominion, ami' before the Government couiil suspend any portion of an Act some reason from other parts of the IMminion should i>e in evidence for such suspension: CD the application for suspension was made by two or three employers in Auckland only: i4i that the hour now fixed by the Act and award is quite early enough for any worker ti> be required to start work, and that to fi\ an earlier starting hour than 4 a.m. would cause undue hardship on the employee*;, engutred. The Court reserved its nleoision. but the secretary of tiie Dairy Employees" Union ha* now received intitiiation from Mr. Merries. Acting-Minister of Labour. stating that the I ourt is unable to recommend that the present restriction be removed, and it is consequently not his intention to take any further action in the matter. This decision will allay any apprehension in the minds of the employees as to the possibility of their being required to get out earlier than 4 o'clock on these cold winter _ornin'*s.
