It Is claimed for "Intolerance" that the audience Is fairly swept off its feet with amazement nt the prodigality of the production 11 is an amazement that exists long after leaving the theatre. Iv "Intolerance" Mr I>. W. Griffith shows lucidly and convincingly bow the story of 11,,. world has been written in hatred and intolerance when It might have been written in love In working out his idea he uses four themes. One is the fall of the ancient city of Babylon in all its power, influence and grandeur' through the treason of Its priests. The second is the persecution, iv the Holy Land, of Jesus Christ by hypocrisy. The third is the massacre of the Huguenots in Paris through the machinations of Catherine tie Medi.-I. And Hie Anal theme is a dramatic episode of modern life—n gripping exposition of lives ruined by meddling "reformers." In this production Mr. Griffith has s,-t „ new mark, and created his most notable and ambitions achievement. Greater backgrounds have been made for his action than have ever been revealed before. In hi- principal scenes be has utilised more people than were ever seen in any production heretofore. No less than (10.000 people were used in lhe big scenes, while something like 40,000 ft of film were used. wbi.-h. however, has beeu reduced to I .'l,oooft of the most interesting and instructive material yet shown iv pictures.
