j ROWING. BIGKLOW-I?ARREI-L CUP. The annual single sculls handicap for tho Blgclow-Karrcil Cop, which had previously been postponed owing to the rough weather, was decided at the West End Rowing Club's bontbouse on Saturday. Keen racing was witnessed throughout the afternoon, one heat resulting ln a tie, and the Una! eventually went to L. Culpan, with a decision of two feet, the evenness reflecting credit upon the handicapping of Mr W. 11. Conway. Tbe results were as hereunder:— First Round.—A. Jorrom 235. lost to G. Heed 30s; R. Cooper 20s, beat 11. Be_misb 255; S. Jackson _ss, sneeumbed to L». Culpan 40s; S. Weston from tho mark defeated It. O. Trevarthen 425; A. Hunter 14s drew with .1. Dawes "is: A. I. Culpan ss, won from A. Verran 45.: J. Verran 30s crossed tho lino in front of J. J. Stewart 20s. Second Round.—A. I. Cnlpnn ss, tasted defeat at the hands of his younger brother 1.. Culpan 40s; R. Cooper 20s, crossed the Hne abend of ,T. Verran 30s: 8. Weston scratch, gained the decision from A Hunter 14s: It. Reed forfeited, as did J. Dawes. Semi-final.—R. Cooper 20ft, held the lead until three-quarters of tbe distance had been covered, when passed by 8. Weston scratch, who won ln a comfortable fashion. 1.. Culpan a bye. Final. 1.. Culpan, 40s l S. Weston, scratch 2 As was anticipated, the final was keenly contested throughout, and reiralted in a decision to Culpan with a narrow margin of two feet. At the start Culpan used his handicap to the best advantage by sprinting hard, aud when Weston started had left him a big gap to close up. The scratch man immediate-y settled down to steady rowing, nnd quickly reduced Culpau's lead to five lengths at halfway. Prom there on tbe men, entering choppy water, were imposed a fairly difficult task in remaining seated In their frail craft. Weston continued to reduce the lead, and 100 yds from home was but a lonpth behind. Roth men "ought out a spirited finish, which was awarded to Culpan by two feet. Mr W. D'Audney was the starter, and Mr A. Coulam the judge.
