U.S. TAXATION.
RAISING £350,000,000. CONSERVING FOOD SUPPLIES. VAXCCITER, May 12. A message from Washington states that the I nitrd States Government is struggling with a measure by which it proposes to obtain .Co.jO.OUO.UOO in war tHXCS. A committee is considering the question of taxes on advertising, amusements, insurances, club dues, moving picture shows, cosmetics, and chewinggum. The interests affected have appeared before the committee, and have related how business would be ruined if the proposals were carried out. Another message from Washington states that the first legislative step towards the conservation of food rrsources, and an advance towards the bringing about of a "dry" United States, have been taken by the Senate approving, by ns votes to 32, of un amendment to the Espionage Bill, forbidding during the war the use of grain for the manufacture of intoxicating liquor. It is estimated that £400.000 in revenue will be lost if the amendment stands. The Senate lias voted down n proposal to forbid the sale of intoxicants during the war.
