The committee of the Auckland Tramways Industrial Union of Workers passed the following resolution: "That the Auckland Tramways Industrial Union of Workers emphatically protests against the National Government in negotiating for the sale of the State Coal Mine, and urges that instead of doing this the Government should extend its activities by opening depots all over the Dominion for the sale of coal direct to the consumer, thus allowing the householder to frustrate the exploitations of the middleman, and enable the purchase of a necessary commodity at a reasonable rate."
Small though it be, Bapaume has always been a strong place. It is associated with the earlier feats of the great (military engineer Vauban, and his success in" fortifying it in 1641 established his feme, so that he passed from triumph to fcriumph until he became Marshal of France. It has no doubt fortifications of a far different sort to-day, but those who are superstitious will regard the omens as good, for in the 'Franco-Prus-sian war one of the all too few victories to which the French could lay claim was gained here in 1871. The Navy Ccanmittee of the French Chamber has adopted M. Lefevre's proposal asking the Government to allot a prize of £20,000 to the crew of every French. Allied, or neutral vessel which, when atacked by a sub_r_rine, succeeds in capturing or destroying it. ....
