SCHOOL CAPITATION.
DECLAKED TO BE INADEQUATE. (By Telegraph.—(Press Association.) CHEISTCHURCH, Friday. A conference was held to-day between representat yes of the Canterbury Education Board and dietrict school committees, and the following motion was carried: "That the Government has recognised the increase in'the cost of living in all departments of administration except in making provision for the local administration of its primary schools, euch provision remaining the came ac in the prewar period, for which .period it was really insufficient and is now utterly inadequate. This conference having full knowledge of the matter, declares it impossible on the sum now granted, to defray the necessary administrative expenses of the boards and, with the balance.'-to maintain the public schools in a state of ordinary cleanliness, comfort, and decency. It therefore demands, in the vital interests of children attending them, that the Government grant for the above purposes be increased forthwith to at least 13/ per capita on the average attendance." It was also decided to take steps to convene a Dominion conference on the matter during next eeeeion.
