FARMERS' APPEALS
AGAHrST jnIITABX SERVICE. CASES AT KAVFEKE. A sitting of the Military Service Board was held in Eawene yesterday. Three farmers of Taheke, named Ed- | ward Brennan, Thomas Brennan, and James Brennan, appealed on the ground :that they were the sole support of their parents. It was stated in evidence that they had a dairy farm, and that it required the three to successfully carry it on. The appeal of Thomas Brennan was dismissed, that of Edward Brennan dismissed, subject to medical examination, and that of James Brennan was allowed. John Lennon, farmer, of Motukaraka, appealed on the ground of undue hardship. that he had an aged mother to support. The appeal was adjourned sine die for tiiree months. William Henry McMullen, sheep farmer, of Waimamaku, also appealed on the ground of undue hardship. His only brother, he said, was in camp, and he had no one to look after the farm for him. The appeal was deferred for three months. Frank Edmund Danaher, farmer, appealed on similar grounds, stating that he had an aged mother to support, who was in ill-health, while he had two brothers in camp. The appeal was adjourned sine die or until one of the brothers returns. Maurice Powick, farmer, of Wekaweka, withdrew his appeal for total exemption, and asked for six months in which to burn his bush and erect fencing. He was granted leave until May 31. James Neil, farmer, of Tutekehua, also brought forward an appeal on the grounds of undue hardship, stating that he had two brothers in camp, one of whom was his partner. The appeal was allowed. <* Frederic Andrew I>es, stereman, of Kohukohu, based his appeal on the fact that his mother was a widow, and that there were ten in the family. Out of four brothers of military age three were at the front. Appellant had been returned . from camp four times suffering from an ulcerated stomach and pleurisy. The appeal was adjourned sine die. Julius Menzies Bazley, dairy farmer, of Motukaraka, asked leave until the end of May to put his affairs in order. Leave was granted.
