THE PRICE OF FISH.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—Your correspondent "HJ.E." may hr right in saying that hapuka is retailing at 3d per lb in Christchurch and Dunedin, hut that doc-- not prove mc wrong; when J say that fish are cheaper in Auckland than in any part of the. Dominion. At tho present time /iapuka are very scarce hero, and the few'sold do not have much effect on tho average price of fish. 1 may say that I offered the master of :i hapuka 'catching boat to take a load at 3d per lb. "heads on," but on arrival with his load ho did not turn , up. which shows that he disposed of his j catch at a better price. 1 may say that la few weeks ago, while tho Baroona was ! waiting for her trawling winch, we sent j her out fishing for hapuka. and after a| full week's trial on well known grounds I she came back with a catch that if sold jat -!i>/ per lb would not have cleared e.\----i poroses. "H.J.E." may have paid 8d per lib. but I have not yet'seen more than Gd j per lb charged for hapuka. I recomjmond •JJ..J.K.'' to try moki at 6d per lb, |or tenki at lid to Sd each, aud feel sure I that he will then be content to wait for hapuka until they are more plentiful in Auckland waters. Ec mutton selling in a Christehureli shop at 4/6 and 5/ °per half .-.hoop, it is evident that they must cave been half-starved things that died jon the road to the salevards. a j store sheep that is strong enough to .stand up in the pen would be worth more jthan three times the money. and good ! fat sheep would bring from 35/ to over !£2 each.—l am, etc., i A. SANFORD.
