GERMAN STORY OF THE FIGHTING.
ADMIT RETIREMENT SOUTH OF THE SOMME. RUSSIANS MAKE MANY ATTACKS ON DVINSK FRONT. (Received 11.10 a.m.) AMSTERDAM. July 3. A Berlin communique says:—A continuation of British and French attacks secured no advantage. Xorth of the Somme the enemy suffered extraordinarily sanguinary losses. We withdrew to our second position south of the river during the Bight. The enemy again exhausted himself in a fruitless attack on the village of Thiaumont. He captured 600 meters of trench south-west of the village, but was driven out. We captured a hill battery at Damloup. southeast of Vaux Fort, taking prisoner 100, and several machine-guns. We brought down six aeroplanes yesterday. The Russians repeatedly advanced at many points on General yon Hindenburg's front, particularly north of Smorgon. in the Dvinsk sector, where the Russians suffered sanguinary losses. Generals yon Linsingen and yon Bothmer continue successful fighting to the southward of the Pripet marshes.
