SHUFFLE OVER THE SUSSEX.
CHOICE HUN LIES. NEW YORK LEARNS THE TRUTH (Received 9.16 a-m.) (Reuters Telegrams.) NEW YORK, July 3. It is understood that the Secretary of State (Mr Robert Lansing) is in possession of facts showing that the German attitude in regard to the steamer Sussex is a series of almost incredible falsehoods. It is believed that the commander of the submarine has not been in Germany since the incident, and is now imprisoned at Edinburgh. America is demanding details of the'alleged punishment inflicted on the commander. The Sussex was a channel passenger steamer torpedoed without broad daylight. The explosion wrecked her bows, but she was eventually beached. Several people were killed when the torpedo exploded, and a good many were drowned, included among the number being several Americans. Germany shuffled when asked by America for an explanation of the outrage, and then endeavoured to make out that the torpedo had been intended for another vessel; but it was proved conclusively that the Sussex was the only boat in that part of the Channel at the time. Then Germany gave it out that the commander of the submarine had been punished. No particulars were given, and it was subsequently reported from a neutral source that the commander had actually been given the Iron Crow,
