GERMANS ADMIT RETREAT AT THREE POINTS
THREE KILOMETRES BACK NEAR RHEIMS. SEVENTY-HOUR BOMBARDMENT OF THE TRENCHES. AMSTERDAM, f-rptember 27. A German communique states:—"The Anglo-French offensive, prepared for month*, has been in progress without bringing the aßsailants appreciably nearer. Britiah warship* attempted, without succeee, to harass us. The enemy, in the Ypres sector, suffered heavy }»>Ree without achieving success. The enemy eouth-weat of Lille succeeded in repulsing one of our divisionsnear Looe from the advanced line. Naturally we suffered considerable losses in men and material of all kinds. Our counterattacks are progressing favourably. "We voluntarily evacuated the ruins of Souchez. We easily repulsed numerous other attacks with heavy enemy loßse*. "A German division between Rheims and tbc Argonne, north of Perthes lee Hurlua, was obliged to evacuate advanced positions ruined by a seventy hours' uninterrupted bombardment. We retired three kilometres. Otherwise all the jnemy attempts to break through failed." A later communique says:— "The battle was especially stubborn north of Moulmclon 1c Grand, close to the Western Argonnr. Here we made the enemy suffer the heaviest loffrs. One of our warplanes shot down an aeroplane went of Cambrni. and another was brought down south of Met*. One of our airmen repulsed sin attack on Frieburg by three French warplanes, of which two were shot down. "General yon Hindenburg's troops broke through at several points west of Wilcachnrw. We attacked and drove the Russians over the Berestna, mwth-weit of Sebreain. Farther south we reached the Memeii, near J>uie»tituchi, taidag priioaer 800 men.
