PORTUGAL READY TO JOIN.
That the Government of Portugal has resolved t 0 carry out the policy decided upon by Congress on August 8 and November 25 was the assertion made by Foreign Minister Monteiro in a statement to the Press regarding the international situation.
The decision of Congress referred to by Foreign Minister Monteiro was that Portugal should co-operate with the Allies whenever that step seemed necessary. A treaty of alliance between Portugal and Great Britain requires that the former country shall supply I England with ten thousand troops when she is at war. Portuguese troops have been operating against the Germans in Angola, Western Africa, for some time.
Portugal has been making military preparations most of the time since the war began. Part of the army already has been mobilised, and its strength a* present is believed to be about 100,000 men. A second mobilisation would bring this figure up to at least 245,000.
