SCHOOL INSPECTOR'S DEATH.
THE LATE MR. H. K. BURNS, BA.
The funeral of Mr. H. K. Burns, 8.A., school inspector in the service of the. Auckland Education Board, was attended this afternoon by a large gathering of representative educationists of this district, including members of the Board and of the inspectorial and tcac-hing staffs.
The late Mr. Burns—he was only 37 years of age—had had a distinguished 1 career with the Auckland Education Board. Entering the service in 1896, his first charge after his apprenticeship was the school at Hukatere. Later he served as an assistant at the Wellesley Street School, and was retained on the staff after that institution was converted into the Normal School. Promotion brought him to the position of first assistant at the Newton West School, and afterwards he was appointed headmaster at the Kauaeranga School (Thames). When that school was closed, in 1012, in accorda&ce with the scheme of redistribution of the school districts. Mr. Burns was appointed to the headmastcrship at Newmarket.
In May last year he was appointed from a long list of highly-qualified applicants to a post on the inspectorate of the Auckland Education district, tbe appointment carrying the goodwill and the congratulations of all the teachers of Auckland. Mr. Burns has been ill since the beginning of the year, and his death took place on Monday last. He leaves a widow and three young children.
The late Mr. Heclor Burns belonged to a well-known Thames family, his brother (Mr. Archie Burns) being one of the representatives of that district on tbe Board of Education.
