ANOTHER CHURCH
OPENED AT DOMINION BOAD. METHODISTS ON THE INCREASE. The new Methodist Church in Dominion Road, the foundation-stones of which were laid in November 19th, was officially opened this afternoon- Mrs. F. C. Taylor, who, with her husband, was at the opening of the old church building IS years ago, performed the ceremony of opening the door, and wasafterwards presented with a aoovenir key by the architect, Mr A. H. White, F.N.Z.LA. Subsequently an interesting service was conducted indoors by tbe Rev. 3. Dawsou, prejrfdent of the New Zealand Methodist Conference, followed by a monster tea. A public meeting is being •held to-night, at v hich addresses will be given by Uie Rev. J. Dawson, tEe Rev. C. 11. Laws (circuit superintendent), and tho Rev. -E. A. Kirwood (a neighbouring Baptist -minister).
Of Gothic design, the new church has been planned to seat, when complete, about 500 people. The plans show the name, transept, chancel, two porches, vestries, etc. The present contract Is for the nave portion of the church, with a seating capacity of 300, and as "the congregation increases arrangements will be made to complete the full design. With suitable alterations the old structure has been converted into an up-to-date Sunday-school at the Tear of thechnrch.
The nave of the new church is 53ft by 33ft. with open timberwork roof, walls finis-heel in buff brick, with red joints, and a timber end which can be removed when the extension is to be made. Outside the building is of dark, hard-burnt brick, with a slate roof- Special attention has been gjyen to ventilation by the insertion of fresh-air inlets and ventilators on the top. Mr. C. H. Page is the builder.
There are some unique features about the building. It has three foundation stones —laid by Messrs. A. C. Caughey, F. C. Taylor, and George Winstone, sen. —and a number of gift bricks bearing the initials of Sunday-school scholars. T)ii s up-to-date structure is one more evidence erf the rapid progress which has been made in recent years by the Dominion Road district.
