THE MOUNT EDEN LOAN.

(To the Editor.) J-ir.—l have read with interest the varied opinions of your correspondents jin regard to the Mt. Kden loan, and, as 1 a ratepayer of many years' standing, I will you permit mo to etate what 1 ! think to be the real reason why the proposal was turned down. It was an unqualified expression t>l ~o confidence in tho present Council, owing to the unbusinoss-liko manner in which the /unds of the borough have been epent. Secondly, the ratepayers became euepicious of a moribund Council trying to secure a loan in such indecent haete, the Council having made little or no effort to acquaint the ratepayers an to the. manner in which the proposed loan was to bo spent. Thirdly, the ratepayers rcfuec to U' saddled with extra rates at such a critical period as the present. What business firm or individuals would think of incurring an unnecessary liatiility running into some thousands of pounds when the future is so uncertain. The fact that the .Mayor and councillors exhibited euch haste to carry this lorn made the ratepayers suspicious, and now \vp liiul that the Council still refuse to tako the decision of the majority as final, and have decided once more to try and carry tho proposal. May J say that, in my opinion, it will be wiser to save the expense of another poll, for it will meet with the came result aw the last, and the Council have no right to expend the sum of £140 of the ratepayers' money, -which could be. more wisely devoted to improve some longnej;leeted streets. ] aru glad to see that the ratepayers have at laet formed an aseociation. —I am, etc., VTGILAJJT.
