TO RELIEVE QUEEN STREET CONGESTION.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—ln Friday's "Star" it states that : the Premier will consider an arcade through the proposed new deeds office on ! the site of the old post office in Short- j land Street. But there is already an | arcade within a few yards of the proposed new arcade which is immediately opposite High Street. Would it not be better and would it not pay the Government, who own the site, to give enough land for a cart road between High Street and Fort Street? When lower High 'Street is widpned to permanent alignment a road leading from High Street to Fort Street would relieve the traffic on a very busy pnrt of Queen Street, and, besides, would pay the Government by creating another valuable frontage, and would give light all round, and space thue given for the ' above good results could be fully made up with the use of fast lifts and the erection of a building as high as the city permits.—l am, etc.. AUCKLANDER.
