FURIOUS STRUGLE FOR A MINED TRENCH.
HELD BY EACH SIDE IN TURN.
ENEMY FINALLY DRIVEN OFF WITH HEAVY LOSS. (Received 11.15 ajn.) PARIS, March 18. Official details state that at Carnoy a mine exploded in front of and partly filled up a French trench. Germans occupied it. but were subsequently driven out and established themselves in the cavity caused by the explosion, bombarding the trench with trench mortars and hand grenades. They suceeded in reoeupying the trench, but French artillery and infantry attacked during the night, and expelleyi the enemy with heavy loss. The French then occupied the cavity and connected it with the trench by a tunnel. They defeated a German counter-attack, killing a hundred of the enemy. A Paris communique states that tbe Belgians arc still making progress. They bombarded a convoy near Dixmudc. A French aviator dropped bombs on Conflans railway station, Lorraine.
