GERMAN WHO STOWED AWAY
FLIGHT ENDS IN DEATH. SYDNEY, March' 18. Evidence given at an inquest into tbe circumstances of the death of the German officer, Katzer,-formerly of Hew Guinea, who stowed away on the.Sonoma, showed that he was a first lieutenant in the German Army Reserve. He. and-another German officer (yon Specht.), breaking parole, escaped from the German concentration camp at Liverpool. K-atzer obtained a pass to go aboard the Sonoma from a friend. The steamer-was thoroughly searched before sailing, in anticipation of the escapees' attempt to get aboard, but nothing was discovered until Katzer's dying groans were heard. There was no evidence to show .how he came..-.-to 'be hidden in the lifeboat, the cover of which was laced down.
