TWENTY-THREE OF AMETHYST'S CREW KILLED
STRUCK BY SHELLS IN THE NARROWS. CLEARING THE STRAITS OF MINES. LOXDOX, March 18. Th* Admiralty states that 23 men were killed, and IU severely ani 18 slightly wounded, on the cruiser Amethyst. The "Daily Mails Tcncdos correspondent says that the Allies' operations in the Dardanelles are restricted to sweeping for mines along the approaches to Cbanak. under cover of the warships' fire. A message from Berlin says that tbe "Frankfurter Zeitung" asserts that the allied fleets are using 1-emnos as a base, and have erected a wireless station and two floating docks there, and are establishing a coaling base. A message published on Wednesday stated that the small cruiser Amethyst, carrying twelve 4in guns, braved tlie mine area in the Dardanelles, «nd advanced to Nagara, nearly 20 miles from the entrance. Three shells struck her. inflicting some damage. A dispatch from Berlin says that the allied troops have been landed at various points near Smyrna.
