HOME RULE PROGRESS.
ANXIETY AT WESTMINSTER. NATIONALIST VOLUNTEERS RECOGNISED BY REDMOND. (By Cable.—rress Association.— Copyright.) (Received 10.50 a.m.) LONDON. June 10. The anxiety in political circles has been increased by Mr. .lo'nn Redmond's pointed recognition of the Nationalist volunteers. The slep is intended to concentrate the Nationalists against the amending bill. This accounts for Mr. Asquith's inability to announce any progress. In - letter to the lii'sii Press. Mr. Redmond said that there was no foundation for the statement that the National Volunteer movement is hostile to the Trisli party's policy. The volunteers may lie valuable yet,'to the National cause." Up to two months ago he felt that the movement was premature, but Sir Edward Oirsons threats, the ( urragh occurrences, and the gun-running had vitally altered the position, and the Irish party had thereupon instructed its friends to support the volunteers.
The election of IS chairmen of district councils, who arc ox-oQaeio members of the Cork County Council, has resulted in a Nationalist majority of eight over the O'Brionitrs.
The -Westminster Gazette says that it is not surprised at the spread of the Nationalist, volunteers. Ulster's appeal to force was bound to produce a rctorl. especially when the Nationalists' continued reliance upon constitutional methods was interpreted*as a h-sicnirg desire for Home Rule.
