INCIDENT AT THE MAKURA.
There -wae an. exchange of tniesiles •between some special police and a number of men who gathered on the forei deck of the mail steamer -Makura as &he was leaving for Sydney last night. At 10 p.m. lines were let go, and just aibntit •that time a party of specials, led by a piper, marched down tbe wharf. Evidently Borne of those aboard were annoyed at the display of force, and threw some pieces of wood and potatoes. The "specials lost do time m throwing hack any of the -missiles "that could be secured, and their lusty cheering was an effective reply to "the pointed and emphatic rejnerks of tie 6trike eynrpathieerfi. Someone on, the steamer threw a piece of iron, which etruek a "special"' on the back of the head. The man was stunned for a moment, but soon recovered. A number of other people on the wharf •were 'hit, but it could not be learnt whether the return Sre of the '"ape<jiale" was quite co true. The "special" constables continued to cibeer as the ■Maktiri steamed down the -harbour.
