POLICE CHARGE MOB.
CLEAR WELLINGTON STREETS. SPECIALS USE THEIR BATONS. NO SERIOUS INJURIES. (By Telegraph.—Press AssocUt-»P,) WELLINGTON, this day. Between two and three thousand strikers and others assembled in Post Office Square at 8.30 this morning. iSonie of the men started boo-hoojng a squad of twelve mounteds, and as the clamour ineieased the n-ounteds were instructed to clear the Square. They advanced on the mob at lwlf4rot, with batons raised. The crowd epread. but a big crowd at,si.-nihlud at the corner of the Pier Hotel. To dioperoc these, the specials had to charge and i"cc ll'tir batons. One of the horses slipped, throwing its rider, Bai. of Pabiatua, and fell ou him, Bai sustaining a broken leg. lie was taken to the hospital. Meaiiwiiile the mob scattered. More moun-teds arrived, and. with the regulars, ic-ompletely cleared the Square and adjacent ctreeU of loiterers. A man na_ned Charles Johnson, who had seized a special's baton, was arrested. None of the men batoned were seriously hurt. At II a.m. all the city hotels were closed. Work is> proceeding steadily at the wharves.
