RETURNING TO WORK.
CONDITIONS AFFBOACHCfG NORMAL.
"T&ere can be no doubt," said the Mayor (Mr C. J Parr) to a "Star" representative this morning, "that men are ■returning to work everywhere. The City Council services are practically back at normal.. Indeed, we have more men on our hands than we can, for the moment, give work 'to."
Carrying firms, added the 'Mayor, reported that many cartels were asking to be taken on again What happened at a meeting of stonemasone indicated the position in regard to some of the other unions. In that union, the men, apparently, were called out by the secretary. By a vote of 25 to 12 members of this union 'had-since deolined to confirm the action of the secretary, and members of the union, have, says the Mayor, returned to work. Some of the City Council stonemasons waited on the Mayor this morning, and explained the position to him. The Mayor stated that he would be prepared to consider their case, and consult with the superintendent of works. It has also been reported to the Mayor that a great many furniture workers have gone back this morning, and it is known that 137 have returned to work in the city. This does not include outside factories, details of which have not come in. The fact that 137- have gone back in the city, however, and that the union only totals 390 members, is significant.
"This sort of thing," added the Mayor, "will go on daily nonv. The timber workers are to be given a chance of reAiming on Friday, and the mills, no doub|t, will then get their full strength back. There should be enough material available for the building trades to resume next week."
