TARANAKI TEAM ENTERTAINED
RANFURLY SHIELD HANDED OVER. The Taranaki and Auckland teams were entertained at dinner at the Koyal Hotel on Saturday evening. 'Mr. M. J. S-j-'ahan presided, and on his right sat Mr. Buchanan (manager) and Mr. McLeod (captain) of the visiting team. Tlie customary toast of loyalty was followed by the chairman proposing "The Taranki Rugby Union and Team." Mr. James McLeod proposed the toast of "The Auckland Rugby Union and Team," to which Mr. ('. V. Langsford and Captain O'Leary responded. "The Referee," was proposed by Mr. W. Cunningham, and responded to by Mr. E. McKc-nzie, who said the match was one of the )ine c t displays in which he had ever been engaged. "The Selectors." proposed by Mr. A. .1. Bonella. was responded to by Messr... Mynott (Taranaki) and Callaher (Auckland). "The Press" was proposed by .Mr. C. P. Stitchbury. The toast of Lord Ranfurly, the donor of the shield, was responded to by Mr. .Tame-. McLeod. The proceedings were brought to a clo=e by ail rising and join in,_ bunds and singing "Auld Lang Syne." Yesterday afternoon the visitors were taken for a drive by the officials of the local union, when the grounds at the Three Kings and Eden Park were inspected.
On Saturday evening Mr. M. J. Sheaban, chairman vl the Auckland Rugby Union Committee, received the following wire from Mr. Hnles. chairman of the Wellington Union: — "Congratulations. Your union has set up a precedent which will long live."
