POLICE AND BLACKMAIL.
VICIOUS SYSTEM IN PAKIS. ("Sydney Sun" Special Service.) PARIS, August 17. Policemen assort that a system of blackmail, in order to gain premiums for successful arrests, has grown up, and that iunoopm, pcTHOns are r.rrcsted. Some policemen would arrest anyone for shoplifting, and would en route to the station slip something into the victim's pocket. In one case a, man of good family, vrhile changing a gold piece for a lady, was arrested and charged with Jiving on her earnings. A constable on going to the cells whispered that the matter could be "squared' , by the payment of £1. Accused informed the magistrate, whe increased his sentence "for iusulting a zealous servant of the State."
