NATIVE LANDS
A VANISHING ESTATE. (By Telegraph. —Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON", Tuesday. The Under Secretary of Native Affairs, reporting on the working of the Native Land Courts and Maori Land Boards, shows that the Courts dealt last year with 19.27S cases, having been kept very bnsy. The ownership of 52,253 acres hitherto unclothed with title was investigated, and 783 applications for partition dealt with affecting 383.000 acres. The Maori Land Boards have been fully occupied in administering areas aggregating 1,014.000 acres. Of this area 1.389 leases have been issued, involving 377.479 acres. The placing of lands on the market has been retarded by the dearth of surveyors. "Those who take the trouble to study the previous reports, together with this," concludes the ITnder Secretary, "will naturally come to the conclusion that, proceeding on the lines of the past three years, it will only be a question of a few more years when the Maoris (who some 70 years ago owned all the land) will as a result of the activity displayed by alienations effected during the past three rears, for which period an average of 500.000 acres per annum has been alienated, be left with a limited area for occupation."
