PONGAROA SHOOTING AFFAIR
I'KELAND'S IJCJTJRIBS NOT SERIOUS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DAKNEVTBRE, Tuesday. Details regarding the a Ueged ehootin" of a Pukchjnan settler named Ireland ay a youfli named Clements, briefly reported yesterday, are very meagre. Irelaad was brought to Bannevirke Hospital this afternoon. His condition is not serious. The gun was loaded with shot, and the doctor extracted abotrt 30 pellets from the injured mail's hand.
Clements, who is now in custody on a charge of attempted murder, declined to make any statement. Ireland and dements live together According to Ireland's statement he wai going to bed when Clements told him there was a horse in the fence, and dec °y? d him s ome distance. Ireland said, "Where is the horse?" Clements said; "Here," and, it is alleged, fired two barrels at Ireland. The latter then ran away to a neighbour, who informed the police.
A constable went out and found Clements and Mrs. Ireland locked in the house. Both were arrested, and remanded to appear at Palmerston North, next llondav.
