SALARIES OF TEACHERS.
"A BARBAROUS SYSTEM."
The subject of .teachers' salaries was n>.erred to by Mr. Garland this morning in Ins comprehensive address to th* Education Board on the occasion of the last meeting of the Board as at present constituted. After having had six years' experience on the Board, he was stronriv of opimon that sole teachers and the lower rajiks of assistant teacbers were not receiving such a salary as the work they were doing for the State demanded The biigher cost of living pressed upon the teacher as upon other wage-earners and consideration must shortly be given to their case. A further more must shortly be made by the Government to give further assistants to schools in g w I s \° 1 ' where there was considerable hardship. Mr. Garland further predicted that at no distant date the barbarous system of paying teachers on Ok- average attendance would have to give place to a more up-to-date method than that teachers' planes *o uld depend upon the conditions of the elenrents.
