Tbe first series of matches in connection with the-:second round of the senior' premiership, under the auspices of the Auckland Hockey Association, was again the subject of postponement last week. At midday the executive determined at all costs to proceed with the competition, and posted notices accordingly. However. Jupiter Phivius turned on the taps with a vengeance, and down came the rain, which necessitated another meeting of the committee, and the previous decision was revoked. By this time all players were on the way to RemueTa, and were naturally disappointed at not getting a game. As the news of the suspension of matches did not reach Devonport, the! game betwaaa iSarth Shore and College Rifles proceecJsft, It resulted in a .drawn game, each side scoring three goals. The! ground was in a treacherous condition, and good hockey was out of the question \ Next Saturday the second shield match of the season takes place, when Southland will try their luck. The match will take place on the newly-formed ground at Karori. For the Otago and Auckland matches, the Wellington Hockey Association will in all probability secure the Basin Reserve. After two years' possession of the Norden Cup, Wairarapa have been compelled to hand the silver' trophy over to Wanganui. The match took place at Masterton, and resulted in a runaway victory for Wanganui by four goals to one. Ponsonby intend to pay their annual visit to Warkworth to play Rodney, the. first holders of the White Horse Cup. 1 have seen smaller totals in cricket than the score of 21 goals registered on Saturday by the North Shore schoolboy« against Newton West, whose reply was only one goal. The New Zealand ladies' championships will be held this year in Wanganui, from August 30th to September 6th. The Australian hockey authorities are contemplating approaching the New Zealand Hockey Association to endeavour to get the English team to visit Australia. They contend that it only requires the visit of the team to give the game a great impetus. As Canterbury are contemplating a trip a* far North as Napier and Wanganui, the local Association should endeavour to get tbe visit extended to Auckland, especially as the Southerners owe Auckland a visit. Mr. J. Winter, who saw a good deal of hockey in India, passed through Auckland last week, en route for Botorua, Dunedin, Melbourne, and Colombo, and expects to reach England in November. Areta have had a long spell of idleness from the competition, as it is five weeks next Saturday since they played at Remuera. They have secured the services of Whittaker, of the North Shore Club, for the remainder of the season. 1 hear that North Shore will not figure in tbe senior competition much longer. Mr. A. G. Baddeley, the manager of the Whangarei team, which won the White Horse Cup, passed through Auckland the other day, en route for Palmerston North, where he is spending a fewweeks. The Auckland Hockey Association ba-i arranged with the Lyric Theatre proprietary for a .benefit performance on Thursday evening, in aid of the pavilion fund. Tickets can be obtained from the secretary, Mr. L. 11. Norton, and from all club secretaries. A second evening will be held on Friday week, August 15.
