"ON MY HONOUR."
FOUCEHAH AND MJJIISTEB. CONSTABLE BAKER'S PROTEST. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, Monday. In appealing to the Minister of Justice against his transfer from Auckland to Gisborne, Constable Baker (who figured in the inquiry regarding grievances which the Minister aud Police Commissioner held at Auckland) reminds the Minister that in reply to a question he (the constable) put ot the inquiry he was assured "On my honour as Minister of Justice, whatever you say will not be held against you." The constable says that his transfer appears to him to be the direct result of his voicing grievances as requested by the Minister, and adds: "If sanctioned by you it must be a breach of your word of honour and the implicit faith we placed in you." Constable Baker also points out that going to Gisborne would be a reduction in rank for him.
'■The constable's statement that there has been a breach of faith is untrue," flatly declared the Minister of Justice to your correspondent, when asked if there was anything to publish regarding the. incident from the official side. "The whole matter." added Mr Herdman, "will no doubt be dealt with at the proper time and in a proper manner in the House.
A DUNEDIN DENIAL. ißy Tolecrapb.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, this day. A telegram from Auckland on Friday, in regard to the formation of the New Zealand Police -Association, appears, from what can be gathered in Dunedin, to be misleading. The telegram stated that Mr. A. Rosser, the Dominion organiser, had reported that in Dunedin only two men stood out of the Association. Members of the 'local police force state that they have never seen Mr. Rosser, and that the assertion that there, are only two men outside the Association is incorrect. The Dunedin police appear to have, very little knowledge of the movement. They assert that there is no branch of the Association here.
