THE POLICE TRANSFERS.

ONE CONSTABLE RESIGNS. Of the members of the Police Force in Auckland recently transferred to other stations, Constable Bruton has already gone South. Constable Baker who was under orders to transfer to Gisborne, but who had forwarded au appeal to the Minister, was advised yesterday to leave for Gisborne to-day. Acting-Detective Hammeriy, under notice of transfer to Dunedin, has similarly been given orders to leave to-night The other member of the force under notice of transfer is Constable Mills, who, however, when given final instructions yesterday to leave for Westport to-uight, handed in his resignation from the service. Constable Mills told a " Star" reporter who waited upon him regarding his resignation that he had been definitely advised by hii? doctor that if he went to Westport at this time of year he would be a cripple in three months. He had put in a report to this effect when making an appeal against his transfer. Mills also referred to an incident which will be remembered by many people, whereby, about fourteen months ago, he was very severely knocked about on duty in a street disturbance. On that occasion he was kicked over the kidneys, and had to undergo a very critical operation and was under very strict medical surveillance for a long time, in the circumstances Constable Mill* thinks that as he was injured in the service, and has a clean sheet to show for his 27 month* in the force, h.is Tequest to he allowed to stay in a climate recommended by his doctor was not unreasonable. He was a member of the Police Association, and a supporter of its aims, though he had never actually been to a meeting He attributes his transfer to his refusal to disclose information concerning the Association to officials.
