ESCAPE FROM A LOCK-UP.
A man named Daniel South escaped from custody at the Auckland police station celis this morning. South is a single man, uged 33 years, who was arrested in Wellesley Street last night about 0 o'clock on a charge of being disorderly while drunk. He gave a good deal of trouble when being arrested, and further charges of assaulting Constable Millar Hill and resisting the constable in the execution of his duty were preferred against him. South is well-known to the police as a hard-work-ing, honest man ordinarily, but always inclined to bo fractious when drunk. This morning, about 7 o'clock, when the prisoners were receiving some attention. South appears to have taken advantage of a momentary opportunity when the door of (he cell-yard was unguarded to slip away quietly unci escape. Apart from the Departmental standpoint of the matter, the incident is not viewed seriously, as South is not by any means a criminal person.
