RE "THE SOLDIER TEACHER."
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —I was utterly dumbfounded to read in yourissue bf yesterday that the chairman of a public .body, viz., the' Auckland Education Board, should; say he supposed there was .not much connected with the camps that 1 the teachers who were officers did not already know. Saereßleu! what, conceit! c .. JTet-, these camp's are held as" much "for tKe education of a field-marshal 'is well.as a drummer "boy. •' Of course, I may ;be wrongr : these teachers may be already command-ers-in-chief. If so, I will apologise; but I doubt it. Further, the chairman States •that it seemed a shame that ; the services of .'these "men should be lost, unless they were, prepared -to attend canip. Does the chairman of any becoming proficient without*. ;"..*: . If a public body states that by'their servants attending camp plttces th'eai- id an uhsaJtisfactpry jjoaitibn, -hqw-much: so' is it to the private employer? And yet we hear not a word .of complaint from -him., No. •': He is too-patriotic; the dcV fence of his country is his one ambition, and-rightly so.-. One -of New-Zealand's, greatest" assets are her. teachers; and right loyal a public body should be to such men, wbo give their• time and talents to the defence of her shores, and not. snivel because they receive twelve days' instruction.—-T"am, etc.; _■/' ..,;-!• " '";..'.' ."'
