SOUTH ISLAND RAILWAYS.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Wednesday. The Hon. W. H. Herries (Minister for Railways), who is a.t present making a tour of the South Island lines, left Dunedin by special train this morning. He passed through Mosgiol, and went up ■the Outran! branch line, where he met several deputations. Mr. Herries then proceeded to Lawrence, and afterwards to the Big Hill tunnel. Speaking at a luncheon at Lawrence, Mr. Herries said he was immensely pleased with the country he had passed through, and agreed that everything must ho. done to develop it. His endeavour would be to meet all complaints where he found them to be just, and gave an as6iiranec that expenditure on the railways would be made without fear or favour, and an endeavour would be made to assist settlers in the back blocks before those more favourably situated. Mr. Herries was entertained at a smoke concert in Milton this evening.
