RATES ON WORKERS' DWELLINGS.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHURCH, this.day. The city rate collector has been applying to the Public Trustee for arrears ]n rates in respect of a worker's dwelling in the Camelot Settlement, but the Crown Law Office has informed the City Council that the local. authority must look to the tenant for the rates, and canI not recover them from the Crown or sell 1 the freehold of the land to satisfy them. The Workers' Dwelling Board has the right, however, to. turn the tenant but | and forfeit the lease if he does not pay the amount due for rates. The Council to-night decided to place the matter betSIS the. Municipal Conference. ..Councillor H. _». Aeland protested that the Crowrj....was robbing the municipality of its rates by its action, and he suggested that-the city should take steps to have the tenant ejected, if the arrears were not satisfied. If any new tenants were made responsible -for the arrears the position of the Public Trustee .would Ibe made so awkward that he. would probably be only too willing to settle- the arrears.
