AUSTRALIA'S NAVY.
ITS INTERNATIONAL STATUS.
"ONE WITH THE EMPIRE. ,, I MELBOURNE, April 12. Referring to the statements by the "Manchester Guardian" that foreign nations may refuse to grant Australian warships rights in peace or .war, Sir. W. M. Hughes (Commonwealth Minister for Defence) states he is not aware thai any question has beeu officially raised re-. garding the status of the Australian Fleet. He points out that outside nations could, under international law, take cognisance of distinctions recognised amongst the Dominions. "To the outside world the Empire is one, and its fleet one," said Mr. Hughes. He added that naturally the recognition accorded to the British Fleet would be accorded to the Australian Fleet. Technically Australia is as much a component part of the Empire as is Ireland or Scotland."
