AUSTRALIAN CABLES.
COAL STRIKE DEADLOCK. SYDNEY, this day. The deadlock in tbe Southern coal strike continues. Neither side has any apparent intention of giving way. Efforts are being made to obtain permission for a secret ballot of the men, and also the appointment of a special tribunal, independent of both sides. Meantime the coal trade is at a standstill, nnd the trading community is suffering severely. The horses have been taken out of many of the mines.
DAVIS CUP TIE,
SYDNEY, this day,
S. N. Doust has been elected captain of the Australian Davis Cup team, and Mr. Hicks has been appointed manager. The Council of the Lawn Tennis Association has cabled to the American association that a suggested time to play the preliminary tic and the guarantee for the match are satisfactory.
