SCHOOL FOR BIRKENHEAD.
TEMPORARY ACCOMMODATION EXCEEDED. The fact that a separate school for Birkenhead was urgently required (writes a correspondent), has been more than demonstrated by the opening of a side school in the Foresters' Hall, on Monday last, when the number of pupils who presented themselves for admission was seventy-i&ve. which was further added to on the second day. when 110 children attended, and it has become a feature of the district to watch the children at drill every morning, in charge of two assistant teachers (detached from the main school at Xortheote). Already ! the accommodation is proving inadequate for the increasing number of pupils. So much so. that while it was intended that the school should receive pupils up to Standard 11., the headmaster (Mr. P. ■Murphy, under whose supervision the school has been placed), has found it necessary to remove the two senior classes to the main school -at Northcote. ;in order that the whole of the accom- ' modation may be provided for the primer i I classes. •Mγ. Murphy has drawn the attention of the Board of Education to the matter: and it is in accordance with ! the report of the chief inspector subjmitted to the Board that Mr. Murphy has token this step. The Board of Education has recognised the fact that it is necessary to have a permanent school established in the district, and the cliairj man ("Mr. Garland) has informed the I Mayor of Birkenbead (Mr. Wm. Wallace) ! that a portion of the Highbury Estate has been secured for a site, as being the most central part of the borough for the j purpose.
