PUBLIC SERVICE.

NEW COMMISSIONERS AT WORK. IMPORTANT INVESTIGATIONS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. Members of the Civil Service have been much interested in the latest developments connected with the newCivil {Service Commissioners, and they are inclined to look with favour on what has been done. Sub-committees have been appointed from members of the Public eervice to report to, the Commissioners on the methods of keeping public records and the accountancy system in operation in the different departments. The record sub-committee consists of three experts in that branch taken from the service itself, and their work of investigation, covering as it does all the departments under the Commissioners' control, i.s made all the easier from the fact that they are themselves departmental »nrployees. The same system has been followed with the bookkeeping investigation, three capable accountants in the service having been deputed to report to the Commissioners, while in regard to storekeeping methods there will be a conference of head storekeepers. Meanwhile the Commissioners themselves have been visiting various departments making personal inquiries i of the employees as to their duties and i status. If the new regime results in . breaking down the watertight compart- . laent system that has prevailed in the [ service it will meet with approval, as i opportunities for the most capaoie cmi ployees will be widened.
