THE RAWLINGS SCHOLARSHIPS

ELIMINATING THE INELIGIBLE. Inquiries made this afternoon at the instance of several interested people, elicited the fact tha-t it has not yet been I pctor.ble to announce the names of the' winners of the Rawlings scholarships for this year. These scholarships were founded some 20 years ago, as the result of .the gift of Mr Humphrey Rawlings, of Mt. Eden. The scholarship .is tenable for three years at either the Grammar School or King's College, and carries with it, conditionally upon the holder being of good I conduct, a bursary of £10 per annum, free turtion, and free books. One. scholarship is allotted, every year, and 6'imetiiEes. as funds permit, two are allotted. The examiner is Mr Jno. F. I Sloman. 8.A., and the test is similar to I a rigid test for the fourth standard. ! Candidates must be under the age of j twelve years, and must be sons of poor I parents. This year the trustees (Messrs. F. G. ■Ewinrton and G. A. Buttle), who. it should b< 1 said, are always ready to furnish full information concerning the scholarships, have fnund some difficulty in reaching a possibly successful candidate who can rightly be deemed to be ! thp son of poor parents in terms of the will of Mr. Rawlings. Three out of five, so far. examined have been rejected. One has been found to be eli-zible. and it is believed that the j other may be found, on further inquiry, to be also elkrible. Tlie trustees invite criticism of their decision as to whether or not the pp.rents of rejected candidates can rightly be termed poor parents.
