MEETINGS.
_ m HIE NOBTHCOTE ATHENAEUM. Ob Friday, the Ist, the above society held Its usual meeting, which took the form of a " Book-guessing Competition." Miss Beryl Stebutng won the prize for the largest number of correct guesses, whilst Miss K, Nicholson was allotted the prute by the judges for the most original idea. Miss KJrkwood won the consolation prize, the runners-up being Mrs Van Veen, Mrs Adams, and Mr Messenger. After refresh ments had been partaken of, songs were contributed by Mrs Adams. Messrs Norman Heath, Adams, and W. Mellor, whilst Messrs n. Mndinson Cardon and X. Heath submitted most acceptable recitations. Mr Van Veen (president) occupied the chair. WELCOME SOCIAL. A welcome social was given In the Foresters' Hall, Onehuuga, to Mr Leslie Hadheld, who has returned from the South African mission field on furlough. Mr Had field gave a very intetesting account of his work in the mission field. A number of musical Items were rendered during the evening, after which refreshments weie banded round. YOUNG WOMEN'S CHBISTIAN ASSOCIATION. Mrs Knight presided at the monthly meeting of the general committee of the Young Women's Christian Association. A resolution of condolence was passed to the family of the laie Mrs Andrew Stewart. Letters were read from Mrs J. 11. Tritton. World's Y.W.C.A. President, and Miss Spencer, from London, complimenting the Australasian Y.W.C.A.'s on the policy adopted at the Hobart confetence. A letter was received from the honorary solicitor drawing attention to the terms of the lease of the clnb looms in Customs-street, and the matter was postponed pending ftirthpr inquiry- The programme of gatherings in connection wUh Mrs Kaya's visit was announced as follows: On September 11. Mrs Knight, the president, invited all members of the General Committee to meet Mrs Kaye at her home. There would be an opportunity for members to meet Mrs Kaye at the "At Home" to be given by Mrs Dettmann at the Y.W.C.A, Women's Club on Tuesday afternoons, and also in the evening, when a conference of members and social evening would he spent at the Wellesleystreet hall. Mrs Kaye would address a meeting at the Y.W.C.A. on Sunday afternoon, and would give her lecture on September lKth in St. Andrew's Hall on her impressions of the Y.W.C.A. in other lands during her visit to the recent World's Y W.C.A. Conference at Berlin. It was decided to ask Mr Leys to act as chairman on September 18th. The monthly financial statement was read by the secretary. The house report showed that 21 people had passed through the home, and that the accommodation had proved too Inadequate for the strangers coming to the city. The classes in millinery, stencilling, and dressmaking had an enrolment of O weekly, and weie doing good work. The newcomers social had been held on August 31sv A very successful drawlngroom meeting took place at Mrs Hutchison's on August 2»th. wnen Miss StillweU spoke of t*e work being done to the Y.W.CA.
