ATHLETICS.
The announcement that the fire-mile cross-country championship of the Dominion has been to the Auckland centre ha 3 caused quite a flutter in local athletic circles, and there seems every probability of a fine race being ivit-ne-ssed. Mr. H. Frost, secretary of the Auckland centre, when seen on the matter, expressed satisfaction at the recognition of the Auckland body by the New Zealand Association. This Tvill be the first time the event ha.s been decided in Auckland, and as there are quite a number of long-distance runners connected with the club the pveTi't is sure to be a success. So far nothing definite has been decided, but from what cart at present t>e gathered there is every probability of a number of Southerners competing, and the event should be an epoch-marking one in the his-tory of amateur athletics in 'Auckland. Arrangement* have been made with the Auckland Rnjrby L'niim for tho finish to be at Alexandra Park on August 12. prior to tlif commencement of the Thames v. Auckland matrh. and a course lias been suggested which, provided permission is granted, will take in part or the Bllerslie steeplechase course, and then across country to Alexandra Park, finishing up with a couple of rounds of the track.
