lIUXTLY, Monday. The Huntly Literary arid Debating Society met on Friday night. The eveniug was devoted to the reading and discussion of the varied and diversified contributions to Uic magazine, the editor of -which (Mr. Thos. Robinson) wae highly congratulated on the Issue. Though work at the mines is becoming better, there is still some broken time. Nearly every day the manegemrnt is obliged to turn away men seeking employment, the number of men at present employed requiring no Increase. Great pi-ogress is being made with the workshops at tlie Extended, and these, when finished, will materially conduce to the convenience ol all concerned. Mr. Butler, the nev/ly-appointed home missionary to the Presbyterian Church, began work in his new sphere on Sunday, when he preached to good audiences at Ngaj-uawahla in the morning and at Huntly In the evening. Mr. Butler, who nails from Fellding, comes with high recommendations and ought to be a decided acquisition to Huntly. During the week the organiser (Bey. P. B. Frazer) lately appointed by the General Assembly visited all parts of Uio district, and was accorded a hearty welcome by the residents and settlors, whose sympathies with home mission -work the visit did much to invigorate. The preliminary -work In connection with the erection of the bridge, in the way of assembling material and plant, erecting sheds, building pontoons, filing staging, etc., has been almost completed, so that in a short time progress will be visible to all. This week a start will be made with the construction of the ferro-concrete piles. I>st week a meeting of the Recreation Ground Committee was held, Mr. H. Buebanan presiding. Mr. F. Twlnanie presented the balance-sheet, which showed a credit of £1 IS/. For the ensuing year Mr. J. Fletcher was elected president, and Jlr. H. I'eckham, jnnr., was appointed secretary.
