A MAMMOTH LINER.
50,000 TORS, 23 KNOTS SPEED. (Received 8.10 ___) LONDON, November 17. T"'.' Cunard Shipping Company has in- | > ' cinders for a steamer of 50,000 tons, -..-:-1- a speed of 23 knots, and to carry 37' JO passengers. The Olympic, which was launched towards the end of last month from Harland and Wolff's yard, in Belfast, is, with her sister ship, the Titanic, the largest vessel ever constructed. She is BS2ft in length, 924 ft in breadth, and 64plft in depth, with a gross measurement of 43.000 tons. For the last five years no one liner has held for long the distinction of being ''the largest vessel afloat." It is only about three years since the Lusitania and the Mauretania began their trans-Atlantic service as the largest and swiftest steamers ever built, but since then they have been r,urpa_sed by the Olympic and the Titanic. These mammoth liners in turn are to be eclipsed by the Hamburg-American Company's leviathan, which is to be 910 ft long, 95ft in breath, 64ft in depth, and of 45,000 tons, which again will be beaten by the new Cunarder. Referring to the Olympic some months ago, Lord Pirrie said that her cost would approximately be a million and a-half.
