MAITAI SAILS -TO-MCdIBOW.

Tbe Union Co.'s R.M__. Maitai, which 5s to make the second trip from "Sew Zealand to San Francisco -under the new snail contract, arrived from Wellington shortly after eleven o'clock this morn« ing, berthing at •the Queen-street wbarf, where she was tlie object of much interest, large ULairbers of people visiting •her throughout the day. The Maitai, •though some 800 tons smaller than the Aorangi, the vessel which inaugurated tlie service, should be a very comfortable boat to travel by. Her saloon and cabins are well ventilated and roomy, and thero is good deck space. Wiile at Port Chalmers, the Maitai underwent a thorough overhaul. The who!a of the passenger accommodation received special attention, being renovated • throughout. The state-rooms have been ' remodelled on the most approved style, and electric fans have been installed for use iv tropi-al seas. The saloon and social ball are decorated with rich • carvings in oak, and the smoke-room is also fiixnished in elaborate style. A comfortable smoke-room for second- : elas-s passengers has been added to the vessel* s appointments- which, in all re- ' spocts, are most complete. The saloon ! ov-'upies the midship section, and the second saloon is aft, and the steerage in the forepart of the ship. The Maitai will be fitted .with wireless on ar- 1 o-ival at "Frisco. While the bookings by i the Maitai are not very considerable, j they are nevertheless satisfactory, con- ; sidering that the service is but yet in ; its infancy. A list of the passengers ; was published in yesterday's issue. The freight 'bookings, too, ba>ve been light, ' The principal consignment from Welling- . /ton is 25 tons of flax, and Auckland will contribute some butter and a few small . lines. There is, of course, a fair quantity of general cargo to be landed at the ■ Islands. The Maitai leaves Auckland at . noon to-morrow, and will ibe duo at : ]*~_a rotonga on the 24th, Pajpeete on the 26th- and San Francisco on December 0. ;
