"When Judge Docker was summing np 1 in a case at the Mudgee Quarter Sessions ' (says the "Sydney Daily Telegraph") ha - commented on what constituted "reason- '■ able doubt," and said to the jury:—"lf you have any reasonable doubt as to ' the guilt of .the accused you ought to ' acquit him. I am bound, it seems, to . explain to you what 'reasonable doubt' 1 is. I must confess I have a difficulty ia explaining. It seems to mc it means that your minds are not satisfied as to the guilt of accused, but I understand that that is not the proper direction to give a jury. The only way I can ex- ! plain it is-that reasonable doubt which you would act upon in your ordinary 'business. It seems an_ extraordinary, thing that a judge should give a direc- ; tion of this kind to a jury, 'but I am compelled to do so by the Supreme Court." 'Frisco mail to-morrow.
