TOLSTOI DISAPPEARS
TO SOLITARY RETIREMENT. COUNTESS IN DESPAIR. LONDON, November 12. The disappearance of Count Tolstoi, the great Russian novelist and reformer, is reported by Reuters correspondent at St. Petersburg. The Count left his home in October in company with a physician, his destination being unknown. In a letter to his wife Count Tolstoi stated that he intended spending the remainder of his days in solitary retirement. He asked her not to seek him, and begged her forgiveness for the grief that his action might cause her. The Countess is in despair, and has twice attempted suicide by drowning in a hole made in the ice. UONE TO A MOJfASTEKT. SEARCH PARTIES ORGANISED. (Received 9.5 a.m.) fcST. PETERSBURG, November 13. Search parties have been organised to search for Count Tolstoi. No one was aware of his departure except the groom and coachman, who were required to prepare the carriage. It is believed he has gone to a monastery.
