The Christchurch office of the Labour DepartmenD reports that the business of the city is at present in an umieual--3y brisk condition. It is always expected that carnival week will be preceded by a period of commercial prosperity, but; the busy season bas commenced this year from a week to a fortnight earlier than usual. Virtually every trade is in a nourishing condition, and much overtime is being worked in the manufacture of clothing and confectionery and in ether industries of a similar' character. Retail business of ail kinds is also very good. The prolonged spell of fine weather following on the mild winter has probably been a contributing factor to this state of things. The znand for casual labour is good, and very few men have sought the assistance of the Labour Bureau in obtainin" employment. The supply of men for farm work and railway works has fallen short of the demand, and no difficulty is ex- | perienccd in placing all men who are I 3'iiung and competent to -work. » WOLPE'S SCHNAPPS Is at once a ■ beverage and a medicine.
